The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus continues to create issues and much industry discussion. Coming out of an National Pork Board meeting this week, new fact sheets discussing biosecurity for tagging and weighing pigs along with exhibitions is available. A host of additional materials are being offered by going to the pork.org website. The rapid spread and devastating losses associated with PEDv have taken a toll on the workers in the barns and of course an economic hit as well. Doing everything you can within your county to maintain strict biosecurity measures is important.
In addition, there is a video being circulated that has questioned the use of feedback procedures as a method of within herd standardization of PEDv health status (particularly trying to stabilize sow herds). While the feedback process itself may be difficult for the general public to stomach, the benefit is significant in reducing the number of dead piglets and sick animals on the farm. This is an approach to improve animal well-being.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or others in Veterinary Preventive Medicine (Dr. Andy Bowman) or ODA (Dr. Tony Forshey) if there are questions.
